I had such a terrible time with Dream host. After being a Dream host customer for some years, I wanted to cancel my account. After a miscommunication due to an out of date e-mail address, my account was suspended. In good faith I paid my $119 to Dream host expecting all of my websites, mailing lists, and emails to be there and back to normal. Well, everything was gone.

Dream host is not good. They moved some servers, the switch meant that everything was going to be down for 4-5 hours in the middle of the night.

You can’t say there’s a host that never goes down. No host wants to go down, and they do what they can to prevent it from happening. Also I can’t understand how people can complain about DH’s support… From my experience with them it’s been impeccable, and they’re very friendly.

I have some of my current clients, who were using Dream host. Due to the fact that they were discussing about a warez product, dream host removed their account, further more, they also complained about their support that their site was almost always down and no one gave them any answer on anything.

Dream host doesn’t really get the idea of customer service. If you do give Dream host a try, absolutely do not pay by any other way than credit card, so you can get your money back.

In my short time with DreamHost, I experienced mail problems, database problems, site outages, and slow performance.

I have a Dreamhost account, they looked good at the time, though I suspect the good initial coupon deal is what secures them a good part of their customers.
Attempting to determine the server loads I discovered typically 24-36 domains per IP, my basic account's 8 domains are spread over 3 different domains. Must be some distributed server scheme I am not familiar with.
Other shared host services seem to average more like 300-400 domains per IP. (I saw one ip with a million domains on it, I'd hate to share the server with that domainer's parked sites)
I did see one gripe about their virtual private server having the same down time and service issues as shared.
Besides their having an active blog showing a degree of openness, I picked them because they happen to be in get within their face distance from my local.

I'm a fan of dreamhost actually. For the same reason that you said they don't suck. That they do it as well or better than all other shared packages. While there are problems from time to time, it is to be expected on a shared host. But I've used other hosts, and dreamhost is easy to quit, get help, and all the other important areas. 1&1 was the worst -- in fact, I almost had to go to litigation in order to stop their service! It was a terrible host. I'm a happy dreamhost customer -- at least for my shared accounts.
